Dear Subscriber,
As the Hudson Taylor movie project picks up momentum, practical considerations threaten to frustrate our plan. Our CEO, Soo Loh, shares how these constraints enhance the film and our faith. Pray with us as we share the latest developments.
Shaped for Purpose
By Soo Loh, CEO of Half Crown Media
In their hearts humans plan their course, but the Lord establishes their steps. (Proverbs 16:9)
This Lent season, I’ve been reflecting on the Gospel of Mark. One verse in particular has stayed with me:
“Let us go somewhere else—to the nearby villages—so I can preach there also. That is why I have come.” (Mark 1:38)
Mark’s Gospel moves with urgency—events unfold quickly, often marked by the word “immediately”. Even with that fast pace, there is no haste but clarity. Jesus remained deeply anchored in His purpose. He made intentional choices—not responding to needs or opportunities, but discerning what aligned with His mission. Even with the limits of time, energy, and human life, He never lost sight of His calling.
This year, the movie project is also marked by action and time-sensitive decisions. We are called to tell an authentic and impactful story of Hudson and Maria Taylor. At the same time, we are working within real constraints. Resources are finite. Time is limited. The scope is evolving.
We learn to see these constraints not as obstacles, but rather as shaping forces of the outcome. It also opens a window to witness God’s faithfulness and provision beyond the limits of what our eyes can see.
Like any purposeful endeavor, this project requires discernment. It involves setting priorities, making trade-offs, and choosing what matters most. The recurring question is how we remain faithful to the purpose God has given us.
During the recent location scouting trip, the production team envisioned how each scene could be authentically presented in the setting. This allowed further fine tuning of the script to align with production realities – adapting to the location, budget considerations and logistic support available. The result is a script that is tighter in structure and deeper in emotional arc.
We are in the process of confirming a director who shares the same vision for the movie. We are also working with local partners to prepare the production plan—developing budgets and schedules, building the crew, and navigating necessary approvals. Each step brings a set of decisions, and with them, the ongoing need for wisdom and clarity.
In all of this, we are reminded that constraints can serve a deeper purpose. They help clarify our vision. They define priorities. They invite us to depend not on abundance, but on God’s faithfulness. Rather than distracting us from the work, they are actively shaping the work.
We hold onto the lesson from Mark 6, where Jesus fed the five thousand with five loaves and two fish. “They all ate and were satisfied” (Mark 6:42). What seemed insufficient became more than enough in His hands. Our prayer is that God would take what He has entrusted to us, however limited it may seem, and multiply it for His purposes.
Thank you for being part of this journey with us.
Project Updates and Prayer Items
We are deeply grateful for the production team. Over the past month, they have invested tremendous effort in bringing together many moving parts—developing a preliminary detailed schedule and budgeting framework for the project. As a team, we spent time reviewing these plans and learning from our producers, gaining a deeper appreciation for the thought, care, and discernment behind each decision.
This has also been a month of significant progress. We made some major business decisions. In addition, we have begun early conversations on going beyond the film—exploring ways to support the viewers in responding to God’s calling for their lives.
We give thanks for answered prayers and continue to pray for areas in progress:
- Praise God for the director selection process, which has been encouraging and marked by a clear sense of His guidance.
- Praise God for strengthening the production team through partnerships with local collaborators and a shared, thoughtful decision-making process.
- Protection & Health: Pray for God’s protection and sustaining grace over all team members, supporters, and their families.
- Unity & Team Formation: Pray for God’s leading in appointing the right director, cast, and crew. Ask for the building of a Christ-centered, multicultural team that reflects unity and shared purpose in the months ahead.
- Script Development: Pray for creativity to fine-tune the screenplay within the constraints of budget and filming environment. May God multiply what He entrusted to us, using these constraints to shape a film that is authentic and impactful, communicating His love and purpose clearly.
- Wisdom & Spiritual Growth: Pray for God’s wisdom and favor in every decision. May all who are involved—team members, supporters, and donors—grow in their relationship with Him through this journey.
