Hudson Taylor famously said, “There are commonly three stages in the work of God: First impossible, then difficult, then done.”
I have known this saying for years, written it, and spoken it on many occasions. But hearing it delivered on set by the actor who played Hudson Taylor moved me deeply. I thought of the many struggles Hudson and Maria experienced in China, and the challenges they overcame to bring God’s love to the inland provinces. Finally, Chinese believers serving God side by side with missionaries brought deep joy to their hearts.
Then I thought of the impossible, the difficult, and the done in our movie project. When we first received the challenge to produce a feature film on God’s love for China and His work through the young Hudson Taylor, it felt impossible. Then God brought others to walk with us, sharing their gifts of finance, creativity, prayer and friendship. Now, sixteen years later, we witnessed the movie in production. It seems that the impossible has cleared the hurdle of the difficult and is racing towards the finishing line —done.
As we have experienced repeatedly, one task done often is the beginning of another impossibility. The movie is never intended to be the end goal. It is made as a tool for God’s use in blessing viewers, and through their transformed lives, multiplying His blessings to many more. Producing a beautiful, engaging, authentic movie is just the first step. We hope to build a global network to respond to viewers, to walk with them as they take their next steps in their faith journey.
How do we build such a network? We are exploring and considering. One thing we are sure is that it cannot be done by one person, one organization, or one approach. It must serve different languages, cultures and contexts. And it must be shaped by people who want to see lives changed and who are willing to walk through difficult challenges until it is DONE!
Will you join us on this next impossibility?
