June 2025 Newsletter

Dear Subscriber,

Hudson Taylor has been known and respected for his childlike faith and total dependence on God. Yet unbelief had once worn out his spirit and body, in England, in 1865.

Brighton Beach – Past and Present

He conquered my unbelief

Months of earnest prayers resulted in a deep conviction that a special agency was needed to evangelize the inland China. Hudson Taylor recognized that “if I prayed for workers, they would be given me, the means for our going forth would be provided, and doors would be opened before us in unreached parts of the Empire.” But he had yet to learn to trust God for the keeping power and grace. He feared that, “in the midst of the dangers, difficulties, and trials which would necessarily be connected with such a work, some might break down, and bitterly reproach me for having encouraged them to undertake an enterprise for which they were unequal.

He was torn. Every day, tens of thousands of Chinese entered Christless eternity. Yet, he did not pray for workers to go to China, as he felt unable to bear the responsibility for them. There was no rest by day and little sleep by night, until his health broke down. He was sent to Brighton for a few days’ rest.

On Sunday, June 25th, 1865, on Brighton beach, God conquered his unbelief. He poured out his heart to God, “I surrendered myself to GOD. All the responsibility as to issues and consequences must rest with Him. As His servant, it was mine to obey and to follow Him and His, to direct, to care for, and to guide me and those who might labour with me.” Peace at once flowed into his burdened heart.

There and then, Hudson Taylor asked for twenty-four fellow-workers, two for each of the eleven inland provinces which were without a missionary, and two for Mongolia. Writing the petition on the margin of his Bible, he returned home with an assurance that the LORD would bless His own work and that he would share in the blessing.

That was the beginning of China Inland Mission, 160 years ago.

As we remember the 160th anniversary of the founding of CIM/OMF, may we recognise God’s keeping power and grace. As we obey and follow Him in pursue of His purpose, He will direct, care for and guide.
