Dear Subscriber,
This month, Dr Jennie Fung shares her reflections on Hudson Taylor’s saying about the three stages of God’s work, applied to the journey of the movie project. The Board of Directors announces that one of our pioneers, Ken Haron, will be retiring, and they express their gratitude for his invaluable contributions. Filming in Malaysia has been going on in an intense pace over the past month. We will bring you project updates, thanksgiving and prayer requests as we enter the next phase.
Impossible… Difficult… Done!?
By Dr. Jennie Fung, Board Chairperson, Half Crown Media
Hudson Taylor famously said, “There are commonly three stages in the work of God: First impossible, then difficult, then done.”
I have known this saying for years, written it, and spoken it on many occasions. But hearing it delivered on set by the actor who played Hudson Taylor moved me deeply. I thought of the many struggles Hudson and Maria experienced in China, and the challenges they overcame to bring God’s love to the inland provinces. Finally, Chinese believers serving God side by side with missionaries brought deep joy to their hearts.
Then I thought of the impossible, the difficult, and the done in our movie project. When we first received the challenge to produce a feature film on God’s love for China and His work through the young Hudson Taylor, it felt impossible. Then God brought others to walk with us, sharing their gifts of finance, creativity, prayer and friendship. Now, sixteen years later, we witnessed the movie in production. It seems that the impossible has cleared the hurdle of the difficult and is racing towards the finishing line —done.
As we have experienced repeatedly, one task done often is the beginning of another impossibility. The movie is never intended to be the end goal. It is made as a tool for God’s use in blessing viewers, and through their transformed lives, multiplying His blessings to many more. Producing a beautiful, engaging, authentic movie is just the first step. We hope to build a global network to respond to viewers, to walk with them as they take their next steps in their faith journey.
How do we build such a network? We are exploring and considering. One thing we are sure is that it cannot be done by one person, one organization, or one approach. It must serve different languages, cultures and contexts. And it must be shaped by people who want to see lives changed and who are willing to walk through difficult challenges until it is DONE!
Will you join us on this next impossibility?
Announcement
Retirement of Ken Haron, Director for Partnerships and Development
The Half Crown Media Board of Directors would like to express our deep appreciation for our dear colleague, Ken Haron, for his faithful service for more than16 years. Ken has journeyed with the Hudson Taylor movie project from its inception. There have been times of great challenges and setbacks. Yet Ken has held firmly to the vision and persevered throughout the development and production of the movie. We value his contributions and fellowship over the years.
With the filming now nearing completion, Ken thought that this would be a suitable time for him to step down from his role as the Director for Partnership and Development. As one of the Executive Producers, he will see the movie through postproduction and distribution. He would also serve as a consultant to the movie project, allowing the Board and our executive leaders to draw on his rich experience, relationships and organizational memories. His continual intercession and support will be a source of encouragement for us.
The Board expresses our heartfelt gratitude and blessings to Ken and his supportive wife, Barb. May God fill them with joy as they see the fruits of their labour of love. May their lives continue to shine for God and bless many, near or far.
Project Updates and Prayer Items
We are now in the final week of production and are counting down the days until filming wraps.
Over the past four weeks, we have witnessed God’s faithfulness time and again. Despite challenges including changes in costume suppliers, the unexpected departure of a key team member, health concerns among cast and crew, demanding schedules, and difficult weather conditions, God has continually provided, protected, and guided us.
We are especially thankful for the unity that has developed among a team drawn from diverse backgrounds and cultures. By God’s grace, we have remained on schedule and within budget, while also experiencing His provision through filming locations and resources that exceeded our expectations. Most encouragingly, we have seen growing interest in spiritual conversations and faith among members of the cast and crew.
As we prepare to transition into post-production, editing has already begun. We are seeking God’s wisdom for the many decisions ahead, including music, visual effects, distribution, audience engagement, and follow-up initiatives that will maximize the film’s impact.
