戴德生自小便展現出對花、鳥、蝴蝶的熱愛，而這份熱愛也伴隨了他一生。他一度最喜歡的消遣活動，就是和妹妹戴賀美一起，到家附近的樹林裡去，親身研究大自然，並把各種標本帶回家。在他艱苦的職業生涯中，這種對美好之物的熱愛化為了一種持續的精神慰籍。他所寫的家信中時有提及中國的動植物。當被緊迫的職責所累時，他也常常借著照料幾種特定的花卉綠植來疏解壓力。
