From the age of 4 or 5, Taylor accompanied his father to preach in the rural parts of Yorkshire. He felt compassion for the unsaved and vowed to share the gospel in China when he grew up.
As a teenager, Taylor’s heart became full of unbelief and rebellion. His mother and sister prayed earnestly for him. One day, Taylor read in a Gospel tract the words, “The finished work of Christ.” He was deeply moved and accepted Jesus as his Saviour. Out of love and gratitude, he asked to be sent to China as a missionary.
Over the next few years, his faith was tested through oppositions, ill health, and financial difficulties while Taylor received medical training at the London Hospital. Out of a sense of urgency, he left for China as a missionary even before completing his training to be a doctor. On September 19, 1853, Taylor set sail to China on the Dumfries and arrived in Shanghai on March 1, 1854, in the heat of a civil war.
In 1865, with the support of his wife, Maria, Taylor founded the China Inland Mission (CIM) and later established a mission magazine named China’s Millions (now known as East Asia’s Millions).
Starting with a team of 24 missionaries from England, Taylor sought to reach the inland of China with God’s love. He travelled the breadth of China to gain understanding of the people and their needs. His footsteps reached North America, Scandinavia, and Australia. Hundreds responded to his call to go to China and many more to support them.
In 1905, Taylor travelled to China one last time. He encouraged the missionary and local leaders. He visited the graves of his beloved Maria and four of their children. He rejoiced to see God’s church established in Hunan, the province he prayed for over 20 years. There, he completed his earthly journey on June 3, 1905.
Half Crown Media’s name is inspired by a story about a British half-crown coin in the life of Hudson Taylor. The story is one of sacrifice and trust as Hudson Taylor was seeking to fulfill his calling to missionary service in China.
