At the time of his death in 1905, Hudson saw 824 CIM missionaries working with 1,152 Chinese workers. There were 18,625 baptized Chinese Christians, 418 churches, 1,424 mission stations and 150 schools. As a doctor himself, Taylor placed great importance on medical work and training local nurses and doctors. This resulted in the establishment of 10 hospitals, 68 dispensaries, and 50 opium refuges.

For over 150 years, the organization Taylor founded – China Inland Mission (CIM) – now known as OMF International, continues to bring the love of Christ to East Asia’s people and advocate for their physical as well as spiritual needs.

Many mission principles and practices that are widely accepted today were frowned upon when Hudson Taylor first applied them in the China Inland Mission. The mission was mocked as the “pigtail mission” because of Taylor’s insistence of adopting the Chinese hair style among many other ways of living like a Chinese. This was the foundation of the indigenous principle of missionaries embracing local culture. Taylor advocated for the people in the remote areas of inland China. This inspired the inland mission movements in different parts of the world. Taylor was among the first to accept single women and lay workers without ordination to serve as missionaries. This opened the way for many more to serve God in cross-cultural missions. Equally significant, his commitment to trusting God to provide for missionaries through churches and supporters started the faith mission movement. Missionaries are no longer seen as employees of mission organizations which provide the full sustenance of its workers.

By their example, Hudson and Maria Taylor continue to inspire men and women to live lives of wholehearted commitment. They gave themselves and all they have fully to God. In turn, they experienced God’s timely provision for all their needs as they serve Him with joy and excitement. Their legacy will live on through the generations as believers continue to hold God’s faithfulness, preaching His Word and reaching out to the unreached.
